Frequently Asked Questions

Buying farm to table beef in quantity is a new experience for most people. Even experienced buyers have the occasional question about our business and our processes. Here are the answers to most of your likely questions:

What Vaccines Do Your Cattle Receive?

Each of our animals are examined twice a year by the Scarlett Veterinary Team here in Asheboro, NC. Our cows are vaccinated each year when we pregnancy check. They pass on passive immunity for the targeted diseases to their calves at birth.

Our cattle are all vaccinated against pink eye, tetanus, bovine respiratory disease, and if for some reason it becomes necessary during a cow's life an antibiotic. We also use a topically applied parasite preventive medication that keeps them parasite free. In some seasons we also may spray the cattle with Permethrin fly repellent if they are especially bad.

The majority of our herd is Black Angus followed by Herefords and their offspring Black Baldies that are a combination of black angus and Hereford. Since taking over the ranch and working the herd we have always used a black angus bull from local partner ranches. This season we are breeding our herd with Henry our Scottish Highland Foundation Sire. Our herd is docile and very attached to Gil as their caretaker. Angus and Scottish Highland produce beef that is among the highest in the industry for marbling, tenderness, quality grade, and flavor. Henry's offspring will be available for harvest in 2026 and 2027.

Grass! We are a 100% Grass Fed and Finished herd. Our cattle eat 100% natural pasture grasses. Most of our grass is fescue but we allow meadow grasses to grow  so we provide a mixed forage. They munch on trees, legumes, grass, and whatever else they find delicious in our pastures. Also, we DO NOT put chemicals on our pastures or grass. We do spray weed killer along our fence lines to keep the cattle aware of the fence lines and keep our fences charged to protect our assets. We only spray when cattle are not in the pasture. Also, our cattle graze ONLY in Bain pastures, we do not lease land for grazing outside of the Bain properties.

Now we did mention that the herd was docile. That might have something to do with the occasional, apples, carrots, corn husks, or other treats that we use to train and keep the cattle interested in us.

How is your beef finished?

It isn't.. our animals are 100% grass fed. That means you get very lean beef that must be cooked with some attention. It also means you get the rich flavor of farm grown beef not corn, grain, or other additives. You can get Grain or Corn finished beef that remains 100% chemical/growth hormone free but it is difficult.

Do you use growth hormones?

No, we do not give our naturally raised cattle added growth hormones. While all animal-based foods contain naturally-occurring hormones, we don’t believe in altering our herd with growth-promoting hormones. Even though supplemental growth hormones in cattle have been shown to pose no risk to human health, we prefer to let nature run its course when it comes to delivering superior Grass-fed Carolina Beef.
